Hello and thank you for reading your weekly addition of theEveningWhispers!
Today, we will discuss the importance of doing nothing. It is critical for our creativity and drive to achieve our dreams!
In a world built around fast paced busyness, we are always faced with stress and work. We are told that doing nothing is lazy and irresponsible.
I insist that doing nothing whenever we have a moment is now more critical than ever. but realistically how do we do nothing?
Typically we can be doing nothing by simply doing what we do in our down time, like:
- watching a movie
- playing video games
- going out with friends
- reading a book
All good ways for many people to relax. However, these things don’t typically help us alleviate the strain on our minds long term. They definitely help soften it. But to no avail, we still feel burned out and overloaded in between these islands of calm.
and so with this infinite cycle of busyness and responsibility, we need to learn to truly do nothing. We must relieve our brains of the overwhelming amount of information it constantly receives on a daily basis.
practicing doing nothing
So how do we truly do nothing? Well, first we must start small, doing nothing can be very challenging at first due to the distractions around us. The first step is to remove these distractions. Then, find a safe, quiet space such as your bedroom or living room.
First, get to wherever you are comfortable. Make it nice and cozy. Either make your bed or grab a blanket for your chair.
Then put some soft music on. I always recommend lo-fi as it is my go to relaxation music. I personally recommend the playlist below when you can take the time to sit and do nothing for 10-15 minutes.
With this precious time between the hustle and bustle try to clear your mind off its stresses. I also recommend reading the book Art-Doing-Nothing by Veronique Vienne. It provides excellent methods and advice on reducing stress by doing nothing.
Try not to think about that assignment that’s due. Don’t focus on that closing shift you have to do. Right now, this is your time, not theirs! This is easier said than done, but will come with time and practice.
Personally, I like to go to a coffee shop when I do nothing. I buy a hot drink and get in my favorite chair. Then, I put on some lo-fi music. I spend the next few hours simply gazing out of the window, watching the world go by.
why it is important
With this in mind we all have our own ways of doing nothing but they all have the same purpose. We need to take the time to stop both physically and mentally. Let our minds rest. Stop the overflow of information. Take a moment to be clear minded.
And so why must we let our brains and bodies do nothing? why must we do something that most people would consider a waste of time and irresponsible?
Because when we do nothing we give our brains space to think about the most important things!
- What we actually want out of life
- peace and mindfulness
- the things we are truly passionate about
- the causes of our stresses and distractions
It is these things we can never take the time to truly ponder. We are too busy balancing and managing all the stimuli and tasks. a routine so constant and overwhelming it tends to block these critical parts of the mind off.
Without true mental rest and focus we can never aim to escape these modern cycles. Busyness creates the danger of losing our most important connections. Without uninterrupted periods of pondering and quiet calm thinking, we lose our creativity. This also affects our personal growth and insights into life.
we need these things!
These parts of our minds are essential. They help us develop our dreams and ambitions through subconscious thought. Doing nothing or having nothing to do, are valuable opportunities for stimulating unconscious thought processes.
Unconscious thought excels at integrating and associating information. Our minds can incubate ideas with these processes. This happens when we give them the necessary peace and space in our lives.
our minds are excellent problem solvers and so it works best when given a break from conscious work. And so creativity can flourish when we are working the least.
Ingenuity and creativity can flourish when we do nothing. This can include relaxing in a cafe, taking a walk, meditating, or pondering.
Anything that helps our mind cut off the flow of stress and stimuli is beneficial. It creates room for these thoughts and ideas.
your thoughts!
And so what I would like you to take from this article:
- Take the time to slow down where you can. This will help your inner self catch up. It will also allow their dreams to align.
- You have all the tools inside to find success and happiness you just need to give yourself time and patience to find them
- Sit and listen to some soft music. Alternatively, simply listen to the wind. Let your mind truly dig through its thoughts. Ponder what you want from life. Consider how you want to live it!
I will also end this on 2 questions.
How do you relax and do nothing?
If you already have them. Or if you find them by taking the time to do nothing, what are your dreams? what do you want from this world?
